Gratitude In The Grocery Store

OK , so this is kind of neat. I was with my mom (visiting from DC for the Thanksgiving holiday) and we were window shopping and running a few quick errands. We stopped by Publix for a few needed items before heading back to meet up with everyone else.  While we were waiting to check out,  I was playing around and since I happened to have my camera with me and a willing photographer, we snapped a few funny shots of me with my feature in REAL SIMPLE this month. (I couldn’t help myself. I mean, it’s not everyday you can grab a national magazine off the shelf and flip to your photo!)

Anyway, a lady in the next aisle over apparently noticed the little “show” I was putting on and said, “Is that you??” Since I was presently pointing to a photo of myself in the article while posing for my mom at that very moment, I figured it best just to tell the truth. “Ummm, yeah. Amazing what a little makeup and some good lighting can do, huh?” I laughed.  Having just finished a run before jumping into the car, still sweaty, with my mom, the portrait-like photo I was point to wasn’t exactly an exact replica of my current state. (As you can see from the photos here, I really “dressed” for the occasion :))

“What’s it about?”

I quickly gave her a brief synopsis and finished with, “Crazy, huh?!” I turned to put the copy back in the rack but she stopped me by saying “Oh, don’t put it back, I want to buy it! I’m going to visit family in a few weeks and several of them are cancer survivors. They’ll love it! And, actually, one of them was just diagnosed with Stage III cervical cancer.” The woman went on to tell me that she was a nurse and that the timing of this was “just perfect”. I almost dropped the magazine right then and there. But instead, I gathered myself, handed her the magazine and marveled, yet again, at how God puts us exactly in the right place at the right time (holding the right magazine) over and over again and somehow connects the Divine web of our lives together “just so”. A nice reminder. Plus, it made me feel better that I helped REAL SIMPLE sell one more copy as a small token of my gratitude for including me in their magazine! I’m ever grateful and it was just so perfect that this incident happened right before Thanksgiving. Even more to be grateful for…

And don’t worry, this is me just playing around. I got over myself a long time ago! :)
